Welcome and Mission Statement

Welcome to the Northeast Los Angeles Network (nelanet), a project in community website development by Occidental College.  We are part of a growing movement of community or civic computer networks on the Internet that serve to promote local economic development, community memory and culture, electronic literacy, and connectivity among youth, citizens and community organizations throughout our nation.  We hope to help bridge the “digital divide” in our educational system and citizenry between those who are beneficiaries of the informational economy and those who are not.

Accessible via this site are links to data/map banks and technical reports, a CARE directory sorted by Northeast community accompanied by maps highlighting main streets, NECRCC Task Force information, folkloric and archival exhibitions, service organization news, a featured community based organization page, a community calendar, a forum for volunteer opportunities, community and governmental weblinks, and the Community Business Link/Tiger Finder*.

Nelanet has been made possible by the Community Outreach Partnership Center (COPC), funded by a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Our main community partner is the Northeast Community Resources Coordinating Council (NECRCC).  This project has been supported by AmeriCorps VISTA, Volunteer In Service To America.  Funded by AmericaConnects, a grant from the Department of Education.
